Knox lock controlled entry access: In emergencies, valuable time can be saved if LSVFD has rapid access to the property. This applies particularly to locked manual or automatic gates across driveways, but the same principle applies for residence access. The faster we can get in, the faster we can begin fire suppression or medical care. This can be achieved by placing a Knox Lock on your entrance gate. This is a system maintained by the Knox Company to provide locks to our area with a unique key. Each lock ordered must be authorized by LSVFD. Call LSVFD to schedule a visit.
The Knox lock can only be unlocked by a key that LSVFD has installed in each of its response trucks. The key is in a secure device requiring an access code to release the key. Each trusted Firefighter and EMT has an individual access code. There is a record maintained of each time the key is accessed, including time and date of release, owner of the access code used, and time and date of key return to the secure device. The same key opens any lock authorized by us to fit our key.
For automatic gates, LSVFD recommends a fire department labeled box (available from any gate control company) locked with a padlock with the Knox cylinder. The box is closed with a Knox padlock. The door has a switch that opens the gate when the box is opened. The gate can be left open for other emergency vehicle access, and then closed again and secured with the padlock when we leave the scene. For manual gates, the same padlock will work by connecting it in series with your own padlock so that the gates locking device can be removed by unlocking either lock. This allows residents to use their own padlock for access and egress, and allows LSVFD quick access for emergencies. Alternatively, a locking fire department box could contain keys needed for property and residence access.
Ordering the lock: We will bring an order form which will obtain the lock. We will sign the authorization for the cylinder to be made. The order is submitted to the Knox Company on the order form with payment for the desired lock. Knox will ship the lock directly to you or to a gate control company of your choice.
Installing the lock: When the lock arrives, it can be installed with the necessary box by your gate company. The cost for materials and labor for this installation is not included in the purchase price of the lock. The Fire Department does not install the locking device. Once the device is installed, the fire department can open the padlock and lock it on the locking mechanism of your gate. This ensures that the cylinder is keyed correctly and will allow access. Your gate control company does not have a key to do this, so you must call LSVFD to complete the installation.
Maintaining the lock: Periodically, at your request, LSVFD can test the lock to be sure it will open properly when needed. LSVFD recommends testing the lock at least every other year. Call LSVFD to schedule.
